About this build.
This detached accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in San Rafael, in Marin County, California, is a 625-square-foot, one-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage built by Burton Builders in 2024. With its white lap siding, gabled roofline, covered entry porch, and picket-fenced garden threaded with gravel paths, it reads as a little house all its own — French doors, black accent sconces, and its own address plaque facing the street.
Inside, the plan is open and generously scaled for its footprint: a large living area flows straight into the kitchen, where a skylight and picture window keep things bright over white shaker cabinetry, matte-black hardware, marble-veined quartz counters, and full stainless appliances. Light wide-plank floors run throughout, a louvered closet tucks away stacked in-unit laundry, and the bathroom pairs a navy vanity with a glass-doored subway-tile shower. A comfortable bedroom completes a home that lives well beyond its square footage.
