About this build.
This accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in Richmond, in Contra Costa County, California, is a 484-square-foot, one-bedroom, one-bathroom garage conversion built by Burton Builders in 2019. The conversion turned underused garage space into a fully self-contained rental-ready home, with an open living area that flows straight into the kitchen under recessed lighting.
The kitchen wraps two walls in white shaker cabinetry with gray-veined stone-look counters and full stainless appliances, and a wide garden window over the sink looks out to the backyard trees. Warm gray walls, white trim, and rustic wide-plank floors run throughout, while a white sliding barn door tucks the bedroom away without eating into the compact floor plan. The bathroom keeps the cottage feel with a white beadboard vanity, mirrored medicine cabinet, mosaic-accented shower, and wood-look tile floors.
