About this build.
This detached accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in Novato, in Marin County, California, is a 583-square-foot, one-bedroom, one-bathroom backyard home built by Burton Builders in 2024. The plan is the clever part: an L-shaped footprint shaped to fit the lot, wrapping the yard so the property keeps genuinely usable outdoor space instead of giving it all to the new build. Warm gray stucco and a terracotta clay-tile roof match the main house, while black multi-lite French doors and black sconces sharpen the look.
Inside, a trio of skylights pours daylight into the living room, with white walls and light oak floors carrying it through the plan. The kitchen runs two-tone — walnut lower cabinets under crisp white uppers — set against a glossy black stacked-tile backsplash with white quartz counters, a floating dark-wood shelf, and full stainless appliances. The bathroom keeps the palette warm and modern with a white-oak vanity, matte-black fixtures, and a round black-framed mirror, and the bedroom adds double sliding-door closets for real storage.
