About this build.
This accessory dwelling unit (ADU) sits in Berkeley, in Alameda County, California — a compact 331-square-foot studio garage conversion with one bathroom, built by Burton Builders in 2025. Set on a narrow urban lot with very tight access down a slim driveway, the project replaced an existing garage on an all-new foundation, trading dated storage space for a clean, modern living unit.
To make the most of a small footprint, the design goes vertical: a loft tucked above the main floor adds flexible square footage that works well as a home office or extra sleeping space. A glazed double-door entry pulls in natural light and makes the compact interior feel noticeably more open and roomy, while a crisp, contemporary exterior keeps the look bright and current.
