About this build.
This detached accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in Walnut Creek, in Contra Costa County, California, is a 500-square-foot studio with one bathroom, built by Burton Builders in 2024. Finished in soft sage board-and-batten siding with crisp white trim and a standing-seam metal roof, the backyard home carries rooftop solar and a trio of skylights, with a raised wood deck linking it to the main house’s outdoor living space.
Inside, a vaulted ceiling with an exposed beam and a wall of wood-framed bifold glass doors open the studio to the deck and garden, while wide-plank white-oak floors and wood drum pendants keep the light-filled space warm. The kitchen pairs sage-green shaker cabinetry and brass hardware with a white farmhouse sink, quartz counters, floating wood shelves, and a natural-wood plank ceiling overhead. The bathroom is the character moment: a sky-blue zellige-tile shower, a forest-green vanity with brass fixtures, and a patterned cement-tile floor. A ductless mini-split rounds out efficient year-round comfort.
