Project Overview

About this build.

This infill project in Oakland, in Alameda County, California, created two attached accessory dwelling units (ADUs) — about 1,150 square feet in total — within the envelope of an existing one-story building, completed by Burton Builders in 2026. Slotted between the main house and the rear fence, the work converted an underused multifamily community room into two fully functional rental homes, adding new housing and rental income without expanding the building’s footprint. Outside, fresh gray lap siding, white-trimmed windows, and a permeable paver drive threaded with drought-tolerant planting give the infill a clean, modern street presence.

Inside, the units feel bright and open well beyond their size, with tall ceilings, clerestory windows, white walls, and light wide-plank floors under recessed lighting. Each home has a full kitchen finished with white flat-panel cabinetry, dark quartz counters, a black gooseneck faucet, and a full stainless appliance set, plus its own bathroom wrapped in white subway tile with black fixtures and a wall-hung sink. Efficient heat-pump heating and cooling and in-unit laundry round out a smart, code-compliant design built for long-term rental performance.
