Project Overview

About this build.

This detached accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in Richmond, in Contra Costa County, California, is a 900-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom backyard home built by Burton Builders in 2026. Set on a hillside lot with views out over the bay, it is a full home rather than a studio — two bedrooms, two baths, in-unit laundry, and its own private entry off the backyard. Outside, smooth light-gray stucco sits beneath a low-slope flat roof with deep overhanging eaves and exposed rafter tails, with black lantern sconces flanking a full-lite entry door and a gravel path leading up to it.

Inside, the plan opens into a bright kitchen and living space lit by a skylight, with white shaker cabinetry, glass-front uppers, marble-look quartz counters carried up as a full-height slab backsplash, a matte-black gooseneck faucet, and a full stainless appliance set. Wide-plank light floors run throughout, and each room gets its own ductless mini-split for zoned heating and cooling. What sets this one apart is the color — a deep purple hallway and kitchen accent wall, a sky-blue primary suite, a soft green second bedroom, and two baths that go all in: glossy teal subway tile behind a black grid-frame glass shower door in the primary, and ribbed green tile against terracotta walls around the tub in the second. The primary suite adds a walk-in closet with adjustable shelving and a sliding glass door to the yard, and a stacked washer and dryer tuck into a hall closet.
