About this build.
This whole-home remodel in Larkspur, in Marin County, California, refreshed a 1,250-square-foot, one-bedroom, one-bathroom hillside cottage, completed by Burton Builders in 2021. Outside, the work extended into the site itself: terraced hillside plantings held by stone and painted-brick retaining walls, a new concrete stair with wood-and-wire railings climbing the slope, and a deck overlooking the trees.
Inside, the remodel preserved the cottage’s character — box-beam ceilings, a whitewashed brick fireplace, divided-lite windows, and French doors that open to the deck — while refinishing the original hardwood floors and brightening every room in white. The galley kitchen pairs white shaker cabinetry and matte-black hardware with gray quartz counters, a white farmhouse sink, and slate-toned tile floors, and the bathroom gets a classic white subway-tile tub and shower behind black-framed sliding glass with matte-black fixtures. A vaulted den with painted exposed rafters rounds out the light-filled plan.
